Our kind of Traitor is a film about a couple who find themselves lured into a Russian oligarch’s plans to defect, soon they are positioned between the Russian Mafia and the British Secret Service, neither of whom they can trust.
Odeon Limitless has proved itself to be valuable yet again by allowing me to see more films and take a chance on those that I might otherwise go and see. Last time I took a chance was to go see a film called Demolition and i really enjoyed watching that so I thought that i would go and take a chance on this one as well.
Our Kind of Traitor stars Ewan McGregor as Perry MakePeace and Naomie Harris who plays his wife Gail perkins, while they are on a holiday to try and get the romance back it is clear that it is not working. Cue Stellan Skarsgård who plays Dima, a russian oligarch who decides to make friends with the Perry and his wife before asking Perry to save his family by delivering a message to british intelligence.
Perry seems like the honourable type and McGregor plays the role well, the relationship that develops between his character and Dima who pretty much takes him under his wing at the start of the film. Understandably Perry’s wife Gail is a bit suspicious of the whole thing and questions what is really going on, not only with the russians but also with Perry who seems to be on a quest to help his new friend.
If you have seen any kind of spy film or any kind film that is even remotely like this one then you will know that simply delivering the message is not the end but more like the beginning of an even bigger adventure. Soon the couple are caught between british intelligence who wants to help but can only do so much and the russian mafia who want to take out Dima and his family.
However being the honourable people that Perry and Gail are they agree to help Dima save his family by getting them back to the United Kingdom. As you might expect this is not as easy as it seems, especially with the actions of a certain individual who leads the bad guys right to them which leads to some really good action scenes and provides the characters to grow and develop.
Damian Lewis did a great job as Hector the british intelligence guy who takes the opportunity given to him by Dima which will help him get revenge on his former boss and other traitors in exchange for safe passage of Dima and his family. Over the course of the film the audience gets to see and understand his motivations for what he does as well as how frustrated he gets when his hands are tied.
I am glad that they didn’t spend to much time on that element of the story and instead focussed more on Perry, Gale, Dima and his family as that is where the real story was. If you have seen any film like this then the ending won’t come as much of a surprise to you but even though I knew what was coming I still enjoyed watching it quite a lot and i think that you will too.
