Now You See Me came out three years ago and now we have a sequel featuring many faces from the original and even a few new ones. The original film is one of my favourite films of 2013 and I was eager to see what would be store the second time around, especially as one of the additions to the cast is Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame among other things.
The Four Horsemen resurface and are forcibly recruited by a tech genius to pull off their most impossible heist yet.
J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson), Jack Wilder (Dave Franco) but not Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher) who did not reprise her role. Instead we get a new horseman in the form of Lizzy Caplan who plays Lula.
Now the one thing I will say about this film is that it will help to have seen the first one. Early on in this film we get to see the tragedy that set up the events of the first film and this film gives a more in depth look at the characters and their motivations.
This is especially true of Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo), the secret fifth horsemen and architect of the events of Now You See Me. That film was a thirty year revenge scheme in the making and now this film deals with the fallout with the help of Thaddeus Bradly (Morgan Freeman).
The interactions between Thaddeus and Dylan were interesting to say the least as they seemed to work really well in the scenes they had together. The power dynamics between Dylan and Atlas made for some great scenes as does the mystery surrounding the eye.
After a year of hiding in the shadows the horsemen are back to expose a tech giant for the privacy stealing company that they really are. However things soon go wrong when they are tricked and captured by the evil tech genius Walter Mabry played by Daniel Radcliffe.
One of my favourite sequences took place during the heist itself and involved some impressive card skills. I thought it was rather ingeus how they managed to pull it all off, however the film was not over their as there was still time for some more drama and a lot more magic.
Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine) also made his return in order to get revenge on the horsemen but it was clear that he was mostly there for the ride. There were also FBI agents in the form of Natalie Austin (Sanaa Lathan) and Cowen (David Warshofsky) but they did have much to do either.
Alongside playing Merritt McKinney Woody Harrelson also played his evil twin brother who worked for Walter and Arthur Tressler. The evil twin was an interesting addition to the film and they had some fun scenes together but I think that the evil twin character was a bit overused.
The finale saw the film move to London as the horsemen pulled off some magic tricks on New Years Eve. Everyone got to do something cool hear but the most notable one was Atlas stopping the rain mid air but through all of that their was a much bigger reveal about to happen.
Now You See Me 2 gave us some great additions to the cast and some more cool magic tricks. I had heard so many mixed reviews about this film going in and while it is not perfect I had a good time watching it nonetheless. If you do go and see this film then make sure to see the original one first.
