2016 seems to be filled with a wide variety of live action remakes of classic disney films such as The Jungle Book which came out earlier in the year. There will also be a new version of the BFG but today I will be talking about the latest iteration of Tarzan.
Tarzan, having acclimated to life in London, is called back to his former home in the jungle to investigate the activities at a mining encampment.
Tarzan (John Clayton) is played by Alexander Skarsgård who has acted in True Blood, Battleship and Zoolander 2. The film does a great job of showing how Tarzan came to be as well as setting up the adversary of the film Leon Rom played by Christoph Waltz.
Christoph Waltz plays a very good bad guy, a role that he must be pretty familiar with by now. Working for King Leopold II, Leon Rom orchestrates Tarzan and Jane’s return to the home they left behind as he attempts to enslave the local population.
Jane Clayton is played by Margot Robbie who has acted in About TIme, Focus and The Wolf of Wall Street. Not only do we get to learn about her back story but we also get to learn about how she came to be with Tarzan who spends a lot of time trying to save her from Rom.
George Washington Williams is played by Samuel L. Jackson and has his own motivations for wanting Tarzan to return to the Jungle. There were a few moments when he usually sense of wit got in the way of the drama being created but there were times when it made for a great scene.
Chief Mbonga played by Djimon Hounsou was set as an adversary for Tarzan to face off against. Using flashbacks this film is able to express the reason for the fight which is expertly done by the way, I just wished that the outcome of the fight had a bit more of a lasting impact.
Something that does have a major impact is the relationship between Tarzan and the animals, sometimes they help to make a point and other times they help with advancing the plot. It is through these dynamics that we really get to understand the character of Tarzan and his place in the world.
Overall I have to say that I rather enjoyed watching this film and I think that you will too. It has a good story and a great cast who all work together really well plus it looks and sounds pretty decent which is always a good thing.
If you have seen the film then why not let me know what you thought of it down in the comments
