The Secret life of Pets

Now I have never owned a pet but the one thing I have always wondered is what they do all day when their owners are out of the house. The Secret life of Pets is here to tell us exactly that by taking us on a grand adventure with a wide assortment of pets, all the while exploring how to deal with changes in our lives.

The quiet life of a terrier named Max is upended when his owner takes in Duke, a stray whom Max instantly dislikes.

Max (Louis C.K) leads a quiet life with  his owner and the nearby pets, that is until his owner brings home Duke (Eric Stonestreet). This inevitably brings conflict and it is not long before the audience are sent on a big adventure as we watch the pets try to survive the big city. However along the way they will have to deal with Snowball (Kevin Hart) and his army of lost pets.

Snowball has a plan to take revenge on the humans that abandoned them although we never really find out what that is. Kevin Hart is great as snowball as his character becomes an pretty interesting antagonist towards Max and Duke which creates some much needed drama and depth in this family friendly film.

It is clear to see just how much Gidget likes Max who seems oblivious to her presence. However this fact doesn’t take away from her as a character and it was great for her to have a moment to really kick some butt (in a family friendly way of course). Max got to have his moment as well which allowed him to show just how much he had grown over the course of the film.

Gidget (Jenny Slate) is Max’s neighbour and launches a rescue attempt to find him, enlisting Tiberius (Albert Brooks) to help find them. There are a lot of different pets and some get to do a lot more than others but Gidget and Tiberius were two of my favourite characters and I really liked their scenes together, particular the one where they first meet.

Overall I have to say that The Secret Life of Pets is a really good film. It is a film that the whole family can enjoy as it has a nice story, great characters and a feel good finale. If you are looking for a good film to see this summer then why not check out The Secret Life of Pets.

  1. The moment I saw this trailer I just knew I HAD to watch this movie. It is beyonddd adorable and I’ve only heard good things about it. I’ve been told Gidget steals the show, and I can imagine why. Great review! Would you be interested in sharing your work on Moviepilot/Creators?
