The Edge of Seventeen

Edge of Seventeen directed by Kelly Craig is the story of a girl called Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) whose life becomes difficult when her best friend Krista (Haley Richardson) starts dating her older brother Darian (Blake Jenner).

Nadine’s life has never been easy and it is the difficulties of life that are explored in this film. Her friendship with Krista makes for some great scenes but for the majority of the film the emphasis is on Nadine.

Life begins to unravel for Nadine when Krista begins dating her brother Darian who also puts in a great performance throughout the film. The conflict and reconciliation between them was particularly good to watch.

The main subtext of the film is the loss of Nadine’s father and how each member of the family tries to deal with it. Nadine may be the focus of the film but every one goes on there own journey and comes out stronger by the end.

Another element of the film was the friendship between Nadine and her teacher Mr. Bruner (Woody Harelson). He had some great banter with Nadine but was also supportive when he needed to be and it made for a great performance.

There is also a bit of a side plot which focuses on Erwin (Hayden Szeto) chasing Nadine’s affections and getting nowhere. The side plot did take a bit of a back seat in the third act but came good by the end of the film.

Edge of Seventeen is full great performances and has a lot of humour to it as well as a good amount of drama to keep things interesting. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I have to say that I really enjoyed watching it.
