Beauty and The Beast

Disney continue their recent trend in taking much loved properties and turning them into live action remakes with the release of Beauty and the Beast. It has been twenty six years since the original was released and this time around it is Emma Watson and Dan Stevens who take the lead.

The live action remake of Beauty and the Beast follows the original pretty well and actually ads in some new elements which improve what came before. For example this time around we get more backstory on the prince, a much better reason for how Maurice (Kevin Kline) is able to find the castle and a new song that really hits home.

Emma Watson is perhaps best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films and I can definitely see some of that character in Belle. This is a character who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to challenge the Beast. A lot of her character was conveyed through her songs which work well.

Dan Stevens does a great job as the Beast who really does look the part. Much like Belle his character also gets a lot more fleshed out this time around. The Beast and Belle were really good together on screen and the Beasts new song towards the end of the film succeeded in bringing a tear to my eye.

Beauty and The beast also had a wonderful cast of supporting actors, particularly when it came to the Beasts household staff. Mrs. Potts (Emma Thompson), Chip (nathan Mack), Madame Garderobe (Audra McDonald) and Maestro Cadenza (Stanley Tucci). However the stand outs were definitely Ian McKellen as Cogsworth and Ewan McGregor as Lumière.

Another duo that I really liked in this film was that of Gaston (Luke Evans) and LeFou (Josh Gad). LeFou was a much more interesting character this time around and I really liked the new take on his character. Both of these two actors work brilliantly together and I had a lot of fun watching the Gaston song.

Beauty and the beast was a lot of fun to watch and I really enjoyed watching this new take on a classic disney story. The additions to the characters, the songs and the story all did a great job of bringing the story to life and if you like Disney they you will certainly like this film.
